Two teenagers, including a girl sporting a distinct pink shower-cap-like bonnet, have been arrested for taking an empty train on a joyride in Queens and crashing it, according to police reports.
The 17-year-olds, whose identities have not been disclosed due to their status as minors, were apprehended on Wednesday and charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment in relation to the incident at the Briarwood subway station on September 12.
Authorities allege that the pair boarded the train shortly after midnight and operated it for a brief distance before causing the crash. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the reckless act.
Following the incident, surveillance footage of the teens walking through the unoccupied train car was released by the police in an effort to identify the suspects. The girl, wearing the distinctive pink headwear, was also dressed in a pink crop top, hotpants, and carrying a pink bag in the video.
Her male accomplice, who was wearing a blue tank top and red shorts, was seen alongside her during the joyride. The pair managed to take the train from the Briarwood station, but it remains unclear how they gained access to the controls of the train.
The girl surrendered herself to authorities with the assistance of a family member, while details about the boy’s apprehension were not provided by the police.
The motive behind the teens’ actions and how they were able to sneak onto the train remain unknown. However, the charges of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment indicate the seriousness of their actions.
