On January 13, 2026, it was reported that U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are on the rise for the first time in two years. This increase is significant, with an estimated 2.4 percent jump in emissions in 2025 compared to the previous year. The main contributors to this surge in emissions are the escalating energy demands of artificial intelligence data centers and cryptocurrencies. Additionally, the colder-than-average winter months in 2025 led to a spike in building heating requirements, resulting in a 6.8 percent increase in emissions.

The report by the Rhodium Group highlights the impact of the expanding AI data center industry and cryptocurrencies on the power sector, with emissions tied to electricity generation increasing by 3.8 percent in 2025. The surge in electricity demand was particularly notable in commercial buildings, driven by data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, and other large load customers.

While the transportation sector remains the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in 2025, there was minimal growth in emissions in this sector. This can be attributed to the increasing presence of hybrid and electric vehicles on U.S. roads, which helped offset the overall emission levels.

Looking ahead, the report warns that the Trump administration’s energy policies and emphasis on expanding AI data centers could hinder efforts to reduce emissions in the U.S. The initial estimates of reducing emissions by 38 to 56 percent by 2035 have now been revised to a more modest 26 to 35 percent reduction, compared to 2005 levels.

The report underscores the need for continued efforts to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of sustainable energy practices and the transition to cleaner sources of power to mitigate the impact of climate change on the environment.
