Chicago Weekend Gun Violence Sees 7 Dead, 27 Injured

Over the past weekend, Chicago experienced a wave of gun violence that left seven people dead and at least 27 others injured in shootings across the city, according to police reports. The total of 34 victims marks the second-lowest tally for the same weekend since 2015, as reported by HeyJackass, a website that tracks Chicago crime data using open source and official databases.

This weekend’s victims consisted of 28 males and 6 females, ranging in age from 1 to 51 years old. Two mass shootings, defined as incidents involving four or more victims, contributed to the total. One incident occurred on Saturday morning in the 8200 block of South Houston Avenue, where three men and one woman were shot. Another mass shooting took place on Sunday afternoon on the 4900 block of West Ferdinand Street, where four men were shot by three gunmen.

Notable incidents from the weekend include the tragic case of a woman who has been charged with murdering her 1-year-old son by drowning him in Lake Michigan near the South Shore Cultural Center on Friday night. Additionally, in the South Loop area, a rideshare passenger was grazed by a bullet that pierced the windshield of their vehicle around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Despite ongoing concerns about violence in the city, this weekend’s numbers represent a relatively quiet period during what is typically one of the busiest times of the year for shootings.

It is important to note that HeyJackass data includes shootings that occur on expressways within city limits, which the Chicago Police Department does not count as they are investigated by the Illinois State Police. The CPD also uses a narrower window as its definition of a “weekend,” from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday.

While violence remains a pressing issue in Chicago, the relatively lower numbers of victims over this past weekend provide a glimmer of hope in what is typically a turbulent time for the city.
