Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart is a polarizing figure in this year’s NFL Draft class, with some experts predicting him as a mid-round pick while others, like ESPN’s Mel Kiper, projecting him as high as No. 9 overall. While Kiper’s ranking may have been a bit sensational for engagement purposes, there is no denying that Dart possesses an intriguing skill set that has caught the eye of many evaluators.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 225 pounds, Dart may not have the prototypical height of an NFL quarterback, but he makes up for it with his impressive arm talent and ability to make big plays with his legs. Despite playing in a simplistic spread offense at Ole Miss, Dart has shown flashes of brilliance that suggest he has the potential to succeed at the next level. The question remains, however, whether his theoretical ceiling and consistent production will be enough to propel him into the first two rounds of the draft.

Dart’s natural throwing ability is evident in his diverse arsenal of throws. While he may not have a cannon for an arm, he excels at delivering outbreaking routes with precision and zip. His ability to vary the speed and trajectory of his passes, as well as his knack for hitting receivers in stride on deep balls, showcases his accuracy and touch as a passer. Additionally, Dart’s creativity and instincts as a playmaker are on full display when he breaks the pocket and extends plays with his legs.

In terms of his offensive scheme at Ole Miss, Dart’s transition to the NFL may require some adjustment. The free-flowing nature of the Rebels’ offense, characterized by imprecise route running and limited timing throws, may hinder Dart’s ability to quickly adapt to a more structured pro-style system. While head coach Lane Kiffin’s play-calling often simplified Dart’s reads and progressions, there were instances where Dart demonstrated the capacity to work through multiple options on a play.

Despite his potential, Dart will need to refine his footwork, decision-making against blitzes, and overall pocket awareness to thrive in the NFL. While he has the physical tools and football IQ to succeed, bridging the gap between his college offense and the demands of the pros will be crucial for his development. Ideally, Dart would benefit from landing with a team that allows him time to learn and grow behind an established starter, rather than being thrust into a starting role prematurely.

In conclusion, Jaxson Dart presents a tantalizing blend of skills and potential that make him a compelling prospect in this year’s draft class. With the right development and coaching, Dart could blossom into a franchise quarterback at the next level. However, it will be essential for him to find the right situation that allows him to maximize his talents and fulfill his promise as a quarterback with a high ceiling.
