Woman Charged with Arson for Setting Fire Inside Downtown Chicago Target Store

Brittny Brown (Chicago Police Department, Google)

Brittny Brown, a 39-year-old woman, has been charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to merchandise inside a Target store located at 1 South State in downtown Chicago. The incident occurred on November 23 around 6 p.m., as captured on video footage. Brown was seen entering the store and proceeding to the second floor, where she ignited multiple items displayed for sale, including shelving, bedding, bathing items, perishables, and dog treats.

Loss prevention officers were able to extinguish the fire and detain Brown without any reported injuries. The motive behind her actions remains unclear at this time.

This particular Target store had previously experienced an arson incident in September 2023, which was later revealed to have been a diversion for a robbery. Ronald Langley, who was sentenced to ten years for the previous arson, had set fire to a blanket using WD-40 as a distraction while a second man, Kenneth Hasley, stole cellular phones from the electronics department.

Hasley, aged 37, utilized the chaos caused by the fire to break into a display case and steal phones worth over $2,000. He reportedly pepper sprayed a security guard who attempted to intervene and fled the scene with the stolen merchandise.

Additionally, Hasley has been indicted on multiple counts of arson and criminal damage for a separate incident at the Radisson Hotel Schaumburg in November 2022. Further details about this suburban fire are currently unavailable.

It is evident that these incidents highlight the importance of vigilance and security measures within retail establishments to prevent such criminal activities from occurring.
