Griffin (CPD)

A 35-year-old woman has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly threatening to shoot her Uber driver and claiming to be “Oprah” upon arrest.

According to a report from the Chicago Police Department, the incident unfolded when an Uber driver reported that his passenger had threatened to shoot him in the 600 block of West 63rd Street late on June 13. The passenger reportedly brandished a firearm magazine while issuing the threat and then exited the vehicle, walking south on Wentworth.

Law enforcement officers located Gabraell Griffin walking in the vicinity and detained her as she matched the description provided by the Uber driver: a Black woman with voluminous hair attired in all black. During the apprehension, police allegedly discovered an ammunition magazine loaded with inert training ammunition in her possession.

Griffin resisted providing her actual identity or any form of identification, insisting that she was “Oprah,” as per the report. Subsequently, she purportedly kicked one officer in the knee and another in the stomach.

Judge James Murphy III has ordered Griffin’s release on electronic monitoring with a curfew. She is facing charges of aggravated battery of a peace officer, battery, aggravated assault, and obstructing identification.

CWBChicago was established in 2013 by a group of residents from Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the inaccuracies presented at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Since then, our coverage has expanded to encompass Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side areas. However, our fundamental goal remains unchanged: to deliver original public safety reporting with enhanced context and depth compared to mainstream media outlets.
