WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has successfully executed its fifth hostage release of the year, involving an American citizen who was held captive in Afghanistan.

Amir Amiry, detained since December, was liberated by the Taliban over the weekend thanks to the mediation of Qatari diplomats, who played a crucial role in the negotiations, according to officials.

As of Sunday afternoon, Amiry was on his way back to the United States, a source close to the situation informed The Post.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Qatar for its vital partnership and relentless diplomatic endeavors that made this release possible,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement.

“While this is a significant step, there are still more Americans wrongfully detained in Afghanistan. President Trump remains committed to bringing all our citizens home.”

Details regarding Amiry’s activities in Afghanistan and the circumstances leading to his abduction are still unclear.

His release follows that of businessman Ryan Corbett and William McKenty in January, as well as George Glezmann, who was in Afghanistan for a “cultural” trip, and Faye Hall, detained for operating an unauthorized drone, in March.

Qatar has also facilitated a meeting between Amiry and the US special envoy to Afghanistan in March, although specific concessions made to the Taliban in exchange for Amiry’s freedom remain undisclosed.

Negotiations were held for months before a breakthrough was achieved this past weekend.

Doha is concurrently working on securing peace in Gaza and negotiating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Since the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan in 2021, Qatar has kept diplomatic channels open and advocated for the maintenance of humanitarian corridors.

Furthermore, Qatar has urged the Taliban to respect women’s rights, particularly concerning education and employment opportunities.

Recently, Trump stirred controversy by advocating for the U.S. to reclaim control of Bagram airbase, which was relinquished during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
