The FBI has stepped in to lead the investigation into a tragic incident in Michigan, which authorities are deeming an act of targeted violence.

In a shocking event on September 28, gunfire erupted within a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Grand Blanc, leading to at least four fatalities and injuring at least eight others. It was reported that the assailant has been neutralized.

According to law enforcement, the violent scene unfolded at the church in Grand Blanc, where a total of four churchgoers are confirmed dead. Disturbingly, officials cautioned that more victims may still be discovered amidst the smoldering remnants of the building. One individual is currently in critical condition, while seven others are reported stable.

Reuben Coleman, the acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office, confirmed during a press conference that their agency is spearheading the investigation into what appears to be a targeted attack.

“I can affirm that the FBI is now at the forefront of the investigation, treating this as an act of targeted violence,” Coleman stated.

Earlier, police chief William Renye detailed that the suspect, a 40-year-old named Thomas Jacob Sanford from Burton, Michigan, died at the scene.

The disturbing episode commenced shortly after 10:25 a.m. local time, with the first 911 call signaling the unfolding crisis. Law enforcement was reportedly on-site by 10:26 a.m.

“A 40-year-old male suspect drove his vehicle through the church’s front doors and opened fire,” remarked Chief Renye. “He exited his vehicle, discharging multiple rounds before officers neutralized him by 10:33 a.m.”

The police department has set up reunification sites for affected families both onsite and at alternative locations.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson alerted media that local communities had been evacuated and that both local and federal entities were responding to the scene.

“The entire church is engulfed in flames,” Sheriff Swanson conveyed to The Associated Press. “This remains a rapidly evolving situation.”

Authorities surmise that the suspect intentionally set fire to the church following the shooting.

“Numerous developments are occurring which we are unable to disclose at this moment due to the ongoing investigation,” added Swanson.

Grand Blanc, a community housing roughly 8,000 residents, is located outside of Flint, approximately 70 miles northwest of Detroit. The church sits amidst a parking lot and a spacious lawn, adjacent to residential buildings and a Jehovah’s Witness congregation.

Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed her concern on social media, indicating that she had been receiving updates regarding this horrific event.

“I’m receiving briefings on what seems to be a tragic shooting and fire at an LDS church in Grand Blanc, Michigan,” wrote Bondi shortly after noon. “FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents are en route. Such an act of violence in a sacred place is heart-wrenching and alarming. Please join me in prayer for the victims.”

FBI Director Kash Patel condemned the violence, emphasizing that agents are actively investigating and that his office is closely monitoring developments.

Similarly, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shared her heartbreak for the Grand Blanc community, condemning violence in places of worship and assuring the public that she is observing the situation closely.

State Senator Aric Nesbitt, a Republican running for governor of Michigan, proclaimed via social media that such atrocious acts against faith and community life cannot be tolerated on American soil and promised to keep a vigilant eye on the situation while sending prayers for all affected.

This tragic shooting occurred just one day after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, who served as the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until his death at the age of 101. Protocol suggests that Dallin H. Oaks will likely succeed him as the new leader of the faith, which is recognized by approximately 2% of the American population according to Pew Research.

Known colloquially as Mormons, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded in the early 19th century and predominantly has its followers residing in the U.S.

In their official statement regarding the attack, the LDS church referred to it as “a tragic act of violence.”

“During these moments of sorrow and uncertainty, we draw strength and solace from our faith in Jesus Christ,” the Salt Lake City-based church articulated. “Places of worship should symbolize tranquility, prayer, and unity. We are praying for peace and recovery for all affected.”
