Family Pleads for Leniency in Sentencing of Nicholas Roske, Assailant of Justice Kavanaugh, Citing Trans Identity

The family of Nicholas Roske, the individual who attempted to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2022, is appealing to a federal judge for leniency during his forthcoming sentencing, emphasizing Roske’s transgender identity.

Now identifying as “Sophie” and using female pronouns, Roske entered a guilty plea in April for plotting to kill Kavanaugh. His relatives argue that his violent actions stemmed from deeply rooted struggles related to his gender identity, suggesting that such turmoil fueled his decision while he was “still in the closet.”

In June 2022, Roske arrived outside Kavanaugh’s home in Maryland, armed and with intentions of murder. However, after spiraling into a psychiatric crisis, he called 911 himself, expressing feelings of regret and suicidal despair, reflecting an understanding that “judges and politicians making policy are real people too.”

Roske, raised in a conservative Christian household, grappled with mental health challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports indicate he ceased therapy and medications during a critical period, leading to further questioning of his gender identity.

In a character reference letter, Roske’s mother wrote, “This is when several of the pieces of the puzzle started coming together.”

Roske issued an apology via written statement, asserting the violent ideation “would never have occurred” had he not been consumed by suicidal thoughts, disclosing that his actions were influenced by his mental health struggles following the Dobbs decision regarding abortion rights.

“I am also sorry for contributing to a trend of political violence in American politics,” he reflected in a letter to the judge, as reported by Life News, also noting his upbringing in a loving conservative environment.

Roske expressed, “So when Dobbs came around, I was still in the closet and had not been taking medicine or going to therapy for two years. When the draft leaked, my self-esteem was at rock bottom, along with my hope for the future.”

His sister voiced apprehensions about the prospect of Roske being placed in a men’s prison, stressing the restricted access to gender-affirming care he would face.

In a twist of courtroom irony, Judge Deborah Boardman, a Biden appointee previously known for her rulings on LGBTQ matters, is weighing Roske’s fate. She once denied parents the ability to opt their children out of LGBTQ-themed lessons, a decision later reversed by the Supreme Court.

The government is advocating for a 30-year prison sentence, with the final verdict scheduled for Friday.

The Gateway Pundit will provide updates as the sentencing unfolds.
