In a bizarre sequence of events that seems ripped from a strange reality show, a Georgia man has found himself apprehended and extradited to North Carolina following an incident—captured on video—that involved him dismantling a pro-Trump banner at a local business before turning to violence against the property owner.

As reported by the Swain County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Benjamin Michael Campbell hailing from Atlanta is confronted with a heft of felony charges. These range from assault with a deadly weapon—complete with the intent to either kill or severely injure—to the reckless discharge of a firearm intended to stir alarm, along with malicious damage to personal property. This all stems from a confrontation outside the Paddle Inn Rafting Company on September 6th, as noted by WLOS.

In a tale that sounds all too familiar in today’s political climate, the encounter was ignited when business owner Mark Thomas observed peculiar movements via his security cameras. He described witnessing a Jeep screech to a halt outside his establishment just before a man—now identified as Campbell—leaped out and ripped down a substantial Trump 2024 banner that proudly adorned his property.

Thomas, witnessing the vandalism unfold live, swiftly armed himself with a rifle and stepped out onto his porch, firing what he claimed were two warning shots into the air to dissuade the miscreant. Instead of retreating, Campbell allegedly responded by firing back from the roadside, thrusting bullets toward the business in a dangerous exchange reminiscent of some wild west standoff.

By the time law enforcement arrived on the scene, Campbell had already vacated, leaving behind a whirlwind of chaos.

On September 30, the Swain County deputies coordinated with the Cobb County Police Department in Georgia to track down Campbell. Their efforts culminated in the execution of search warrants on two properties as well as the vehicle associated with the shooting.

Following a diligent gathering of evidence, Campbell was apprehended and subsequently extradited back to Swain County, North Carolina, where he now faces prosecution. Currently, he is detained under a bond set at $70,000.
