It’s equally perplexing that social conservatives would rally behind a figure marred by numerous allegations of sexual misconduct, including a civil court ruling that found him liable in one case. The question arises: how could they believe he would be the protector of the very victims of abuse? Trump’s long friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, which spanned over a decade, only adds fuel to this fire of contradiction. Yet, Trump’s promise to unveil the Epstein files upon returning to the White House was met with nods of approval from his followers.
As long as Trump continued to echo their agenda, conservatives seemed willing to overlook the glaring inconsistencies in their support for a man who often operates outside the bounds of their stated principles. However, a turning point emerged when Trump began to prioritize his own ambitions over the collective goals of his base. The initial crack appeared with his unexpected pivot on tariffs, a subject historically loathed by Republicans.

Just five years ago, the notion that Marjorie Taylor Greene, a loyal acolyte in Trump’s camp, would pose a significant challenge to him would have seemed laughable. Yet on Sunday morning, Greene showcased her intent to mount a serious challenge from the right.
During a segment on CNN’s State of the Union, Rep. Greene (R-GA) expressed her bewilderment over Trump’s recent attacks against her, despite her unwavering support:
I stood with President Trump when virtually no one else did. I campaigned nationwide and invested millions of my personal funds to help him secure the presidency, which I believe is critical. I support him and his administration in fulfilling the promises we made to the American people.
However, his remarks have been hurtful. I feel compelled to advocate for a vital cause in our country: to put an end to the toxic divisions in our politics. This longstanding conflict has fractured friendships, families, and communities without solving any of our pressing issues. The most damaging comment he made, which is entirely false, was labeling me a traitor. Such accusations are deeply wrong and can incite hostility towards me, jeopardizing my safety.
