Donald Trump’s relationship with the U.S. Constitution appears as tumultuous as ever, especially when it conflicts with his personal desires. Recently, a group of six military veterans serving in Congress released a video urging both military personnel and intelligence operatives to prioritize their constitutional duties over any potentially illegal orders. Unsurprisingly, this did not sit well with the former president.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump proclaimed:
These words must not go unchallenged. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???
He doubled down with the alarming assertion:
SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!
For those curious, here’s the video that sparked Trump’s ire:
The congressional veterans targeted by Trump’s threats include Reps. Jason Crow (Colorado), Chris Deluzio (Pennsylvania), Maggie Goodlander (New Hampshire), and Chrissy Houlahan (Pennsylvania), along with Sens. Mark Kelly (Arizona) and Elissa Slotkin (Michigan).
In stark contrast to Trump’s bluster, these veterans—who have literally put their lives on the line for their country—remained unfazed. They responded with a resolute joint statement that read:
We are veterans and national security professionals committed to this nation and dedicated to upholding the Constitution of the United States. Our oath does not expire; we will honor it for life. No threats, intimidation, or calls for violence will deter us from fulfilling this sacred obligation.
What’s particularly striking is that the President views it as a capital offense for us to merely restate the law. Our servicemembers should be assured that we stand firmly behind them as they adhere to the Constitution and follow only lawful orders. This is not just a moral imperative but our duty.
