Former Death Row Inmate Arrested on Child Sexual Assault Charges in Wisconsin
A man with a tumultuous past, Michael A. Blackwell, 60, has found himself in legal trouble once again, this time in Wisconsin on charges of engaging in sexual contact with a child under the age of 13. Blackwell, who had previously been on Illinois’ death row for a triple homicide, was apprehended by a Cook County fugitive unit in Blue Island and subsequently transferred to Milwaukee County.
Blackwell’s previous legal troubles date back to 1990 when he was involved in a fatal shooting at a party in Joliet, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. Initially sentenced to death, Blackwell was granted a new trial due to prosecutorial misconduct. He was later convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, serving 24 years before his release in 2015.
Following his release, Blackwell transitioned into advocacy work focusing on parole reform and police accountability in Chicago. However, his recent arrest in Milwaukee County on charges of first-degree child sexual assault has once again put him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Facing a potential sentence of up to sixty years in prison if convicted, Blackwell’s future hangs in the balance.
The allegations against Blackwell stem from an incident in July 2024, where a child reported inappropriate touching and identified Blackwell during a forensic interview. The child recounted feeling scared and asking Blackwell to stop, stating that the incident occurred when they were 8 or 9 years old. Milwaukee police initiated an investigation following the child’s disclosure.
Cook County authorities were alerted to Blackwell’s whereabouts after he fled Wisconsin, leading to his arrest at Hart Park in Blue Island. Despite a minor run-in with law enforcement in Chicago prior to his arrest, Blackwell now faces serious charges that could result in significant time behind bars.
As the legal process unfolds, Blackwell’s past actions and current allegations underscore the complexities of criminal justice and the challenges of rehabilitation and reintegration into society. His case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the need for proper oversight to prevent further harm.
