A horrifying incident unfolded in Long Island when a man viciously attacked his girlfriend with sulfuric acid, leaving her disfigured and in excruciating pain. Douglas Graves, 42, reportedly threw a Clorox bleach bottle filled with acid at his girlfriend during a heated argument at his home in Wyandanch on November 16. The acid quickly ate through her clothes, causing severe burns on her face and torso as she screamed in agony.

Suffolk County District Attorney’s office stated that the victim’s clothes were disintegrating from the chemical reaction by the time authorities arrived. She was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center, where despite efforts to neutralize the acid, her burns continued to worsen over the following week. The woman now requires reconstructive surgeries to repair the extensive damage to her skin.

DA Ray Tierney condemned Graves’ actions, calling the cruelty unimaginable and emphasizing the need to protect survivors of domestic violence. The victim revealed to investigators that Graves often carried the acid mixture for “personal protection,” indicating a pattern of dangerous behavior.

Following the attack, Graves fled the scene but was apprehended later that same morning. While in custody, he attempted to obstruct the case by contacting two female associates and even trying to reach the victim in the hospital. As a result, he faces multiple charges, including assault, weapons possession, witness tampering, and criminal contempt.

A judge set Graves’ bail at $150,000 cash, $500,000 bond, or a $1 million partially secured bond. Despite pleading not guilty, he could potentially face up to 25 years in prison for the severe assault on his girlfriend. This shocking incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need to hold abusers accountable for their actions.
