Two individuals were transported to the hospital via airlift after a firearms incident occurred in Gore this evening.

Reports of a firearm being discharged in the Southland town were received by the police just before 8pm.

“Two individuals have sustained injuries, which are fortunately not believed to be life-threatening.”

A spokesperson from Hato Hone St John mentioned that both individuals were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital, with one in serious condition and the other in moderate condition.

Authorities have established a cordon near Aparima St and are currently conducting investigations into the incident.

While there is no perceived danger to the general public, individuals are advised to steer clear of the area.

An Otago Daily Times reporter on-site observed that the focus seemed to be on a unit located in the rear section of Aparima St.

Two ambulances and a police car remain at the scene, with an armed police officer standing guard in the driveway.

Initially, a St John spokesperson mentioned that three ambulances, two operations managers, and two helicopters were dispatched in response.

A neighbor commented on the property, stating that there are frequently activities happening in the small block of rental units.

“I’m not sure if they’re involved in illegal substances or something,” the neighbor remarked.

According to the neighbor, the police are frequently present, and there was a police incident at 3 am a couple of weeks ago.

Another neighbor informed the Otago Daily Times that they did not hear any sirens that evening.

It was only after a police officer knocked on their door that they became aware of the situation.
