Bari Weiss, the newly appointed editor in chief of CBS News, made headlines recently for her decision to pull a “60 Minutes” report on the treatment of detainees sent to a prison in El Salvador by the Trump administration. The segment, which was set to air on Sunday, was postponed just three hours before broadcast. CBS News cited the need for additional reporting as the reason for the delay, with plans to air the report at a later date.

According to reports, Weiss requested numerous changes to the segment and ultimately decided to spike the report on Saturday. One of her suggestions was to include an interview with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller or another top official from the Trump administration. Weiss emphasized the importance of getting all parties involved on the record and on camera before airing such a sensitive story.

During an editorial call with CBS News staff, Weiss explained her decision to hold the piece, stating that while the testimony of abuse at the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) prison was powerful, it had already been reported by other news outlets. She stressed the need for thorough and comprehensive reporting, especially for a show like “60 Minutes.”

Weiss’s actions were met with mixed reactions within the newsroom. Some saw her decision as necessary for ensuring journalistic integrity, while others viewed it as politically motivated. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who worked on the CECOT segment, expressed disappointment in Weiss’s decision, calling it a political move rather than an editorial one.

The controversy surrounding the pulled report comes at a time when President Trump has been critical of “60 Minutes” and its coverage of him and his administration. Trump’s recent comments on social media suggest a strained relationship with the show and its new ownership under Paramount Skydance.

Overall, Weiss’s decision to pull the CECOT report highlights the challenges and complexities of editorial decision-making in a high-pressure news environment. As CBS News navigates these challenges, it remains to be seen how the network will address the fallout from this controversial move.
