Former Team India batter Robin Uthappa has expressed surprise at the exclusion of Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma from the 2026 T20 World Cup squad. Gill, who was named India’s T20I vice-captain after his return to the T20I side before the 2025 Asia Cup, failed to make an impact despite opening the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma. With an average of just 24.25 in 15 T20Is and no half-centuries to his name, Gill’s form left much to be desired.

On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma’s absence from the squad was attributed to India prioritizing an opener as their reserve wicket-keeper. Despite having played India’s last seven T20I games leading up to the World Cup squad announcement, the 32-year-old found himself on the sidelines.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uthappa expressed his sympathy for the duo, stating that Indian cricket can be unpredictable at times. While acknowledging the strength of the squad, Uthappa emphasized the disappointment felt for Gill and Jitesh. He encouraged them to stay positive and return stronger, reminding them that their talent and uniqueness in Indian cricket will not fade due to this setback.

Gill’s exclusion led to Axar Patel being named as the T20I vice-captain under skipper Suryakumar Yadav for the upcoming tournament. Uthappa highlighted the message that such last-minute changes could send within Indian cricket, expressing concerns about potential insecurities that may arise as a result.

Despite the exclusion of Gill and Jitesh, the Indian team remains formidable heading into the 2026 T20 World Cup, having previously clinched the title in 2024 and boasting an impressive record in T20Is this year.

As the Men in Blue gear up for another shot at T20 World Cup glory, Uthappa’s words serve as a reminder of the resilience needed to navigate the highs and lows of international cricket. The larger message behind the squad selections raises questions about the stability and security within Indian cricket, prompting reflection on the impact of such decisions on the broader cricketing fraternity.
