The incident involving a US Army soldier viciously beating a 3-year-old boy has shocked the nation. The soldier, identified as Paul Thames, a 29-year-old active duty sergeant with the 1st Cavalry Division stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, was caught on a neighbor’s Ring camera assaulting the child outside a Waco apartment building. According to charging documents, Thames stated that he started hitting the child because the boy refused to work on his ABCs.
The footage captured Thames punching the boy repeatedly in the torso with excessive force, before grabbing him by the back of his neck and covering his mouth. The disturbing video shows Thames yelling at the child, asking him to stop playing as the boy cries in pain.
Thames, who had recently moved in with the child and his mother, admitted to police that the boy did not want to work on his ABCs, so he took him outside to discipline him. The child’s mother was working inside the apartment at the time of the incident and was unaware of what was happening.
After his arrest, Thames confessed to going overboard and acknowledged that his actions were wrong. He also mentioned that he apologized to the boy for his behavior. The child was taken to a local hospital for neck pain following the incident but was later released after evaluation.
The US Army official at Fort Hood expressed disgust over the video of the incident and stated that Thames’ behavior does not reflect the values of the 1st Cavalry Division or the US Army. Thames has been charged with injury to a child, and his bond was set at $200,000. He is currently held at the McLennan County Jail on a federal detainer.
