The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office recently released dashcam footage capturing a dramatic high-speed chase involving a stolen SUV driven by a 17-year-old. The incident occurred in a residential area in Georgia, where the teen led deputies on a dangerous pursuit reaching speeds of up to 115 mph before crashing in a rollover accident.
The chase began after deputies were alerted to a stolen vehicle reported in Newnan, Georgia. Lieutenant Josh Akin spotted a red SUV matching the description and attempted to pull it over. However, the driver ignored the signal and instead accelerated, prompting a high-speed flight through busy roadways and even driving into oncoming traffic.
The dashcam video shows the stolen SUV weaving dangerously through traffic and reaching alarming speeds on narrow and winding roads. Deputies were considering calling off the pursuit due to the extreme risk posed to the public when the vehicle lost control and flipped over.
Following the crash, deputies swiftly surrounded the overturned SUV with guns drawn and apprehended the driver, identified as 17-year-old Taylor Simpson. Simpson, who had been reported missing by the Newnan Police Department, did not sustain major injuries in the accident.
Authorities charged Simpson with a range of traffic offenses, including speeding, reckless driving, running a stop sign, passing on a solid yellow line, driving without a valid license, and driving too fast for conditions. Additionally, he faces charges of giving a false name to an officer, obstruction of an officer, theft by receiving stolen property, and fleeing or attempting to elude police.
Simpson’s bond was set at $6,500, with specific amounts allocated for each offense. He is currently held without bond at the Fayette County Jail. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with high-speed chases and the importance of public safety in law enforcement operations.
