California Attorney General Promises Vigorous Review of Paramount Skydance’s Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery
Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General, has issued a strong statement regarding the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance. He emphasized that the deal is not finalized and that regulatory scrutiny is still ongoing. Bonta assured that the California Department of Justice will conduct a thorough review of the transaction.
The events leading up to Paramount Skydance’s offer to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery have been filled with twists and turns. Despite Netflix initially sealing a sale agreement with WBD in December, they backed out after Paramount Skydance raised their bid price. This move put Paramount Skydance in a position to potentially acquire Warner Bros. Discovery entirely.
Concerns have been raised about the consolidation of a traditional Hollywood studio with a leading streaming platform. Bonta’s warning to Netflix and WBD reflects the growing political scrutiny surrounding big business, particularly in the media industry.
Prior to Netflix withdrawing from the deal, a group of 11 Republican state attorneys general urged the Department of Justice to closely examine the implications of the acquisition. They expressed fears of market concentration leading to higher prices, reduced competition, and less innovation in the streaming industry. The attorneys general also raised concerns about the impact on movie theaters and the overall dominance of the U.S. in the global film market.
The coalition of attorneys general represents states including Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia. Their collective message underscores the significant regulatory challenges facing the Paramount Skydance-Warner Bros. Discovery deal.
