Secuoya Studios has named José María Caro as its chief content officer, following his departure from HBO Max Spain. This strategic move aims to bolster the Madrid-based studio’s global content strategy.
Caro’s extensive executive experience includes roles at Amazon MGM Studios, Buendía Estudios, and the Middle East Broadcasting Center, marking a career rich in content creation, production, and executive leadership.
In his new role, Caro will spearhead the creative development of new projects, shape the editorial direction of Secuoya Studios’ productions, and manage sales and international market expansion strategies. His responsibilities also encompass strengthening ties with creators, talent, and strategic partners to develop projects with local roots and global appeal.
This appointment aligns with Secuoya Studios’ efforts to solidify its status as an international independent studio, building on five years since its inception. As part of the Secuoya Content Group, the company has ventured into film, series, and unscripted productions, positioning itself as a hub for creating, producing, and distributing premium content for platforms and broadcasters.
Among Secuoya Studios’ recent international projects are “Zorro,” a Prime Video-backed reboot of the iconic masked hero, distributed globally by Mediawan Rights; the William Levy-led “Montecristo”; and “Los 39,” a Spain-Colombia historical thriller launched on Prime Video in Latin America.
“José María Caro brings together an exceptional combination of creative vision, international experience, and deep expertise in content development and production,” said Raúl Berdonés, executive chairman of Secuoya Content Group. His arrival, Berdonés added, enhances Secuoya Studios’ strong and distinctive strategy and opens up new opportunities for growth and international expansion.
Caro arrives at Secuoya Studios after serving as HBO Max’s head of original fiction production in Spain. Previously, he held senior content and production positions across the Middle East and Asia-Pacific at Mediapro ME, MBC, and Originals Media Group.
He also worked at Buendía Estudios as an executive producer on “The Cook of Castamar,” before moving to Amazon MGM Studios to lead Spanish original series, where he contributed to projects like “Red Queen” and “Los Farad.”
“I am delighted to be joining Secuoya Studios, a leading company in the audiovisual sector with a unique positioning and a clear ambition for global growth,” Caro said.
“I approach this new stage with great enthusiasm and with the goal of contributing to the company’s international expansion and strategic development. Secuoya Studios has extraordinary talent, vision, and potential to continue growing in the global market, and I am very excited to be part of that journey.”
The company operates out of Madrid and has a presence in Latin America—including Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile—and the U.S., advancing a strategy built around local creative and production units designed to generate, adapt, and distribute content across territories.
