Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently appeared before the Senate Appropriations Committee to request additional funding for the ongoing conflict with Iran. Despite previous claims by both Trump and Hegseth that the war has concluded with a U.S. victory, Hegseth is seeking $88 billion more in taxpayer money.

Democratic Senators on the committee were ready with challenging questions regarding the current status of the war and the United States’ objectives in Iran.

Deputy Minority Whip Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) questioned Hegseth, stating:

The issue isn’t about whether we can dominate; it’s about the timing of our use of military force to project power globally. Iran still has sufficient missile capabilities to threaten our bases and interests in the region. Although the Blue Water Navy has been destroyed, the IRGC retains capabilities, including drones and missiles, which can target us and lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz, hindering their nuclear potential.

Bombing reduces capabilities, but we haven’t eliminated Iran’s nuclear threat. The setback we’ve achieved doesn’t compare to the impact of the Obama nuclear deal, which avoided putting our troops in danger.

The new goal is to open the Strait of Hormuz, but it was already open before this conflict began. So, how can you assure my constituents that this war is progressing well?

Hegseth’s response failed to convincingly address these concerns, highlighting the challenges the U.S. faces in claiming victory in this war.
