Arctic winter sea ice is once again diminishing rapidly after a temporary slowdown in its melting, according to scientists.
For decades, human-induced global warming has been responsible for the loss of winter sea ice. Although, in the early 2020s, research suggested a decrease in the rate of loss in the region.
However, a study conducted by the University of Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre, utilizing recent satellite data, has identified extremely low sea ice levels during the winters of 2025 and 2026 in the Arctic.

Incorporating these findings into long-term trends, the research team noted that the winter sea ice loss in the area appears to have resumed a significant downward trajectory.
Duo Chan, the lead author from the University of Southampton’s School of Ocean and Earth Science, remarked: “This sharp drop changes the way we interpret recent Arctic winter sea ice change.
“What looked like a pause in the early 2020s now appears to have been a temporary slowdown within a longer-term decline associated with global warming.”
Arctic sea ice serves as a buffer between the relatively warm Arctic Ocean and the much colder winter atmosphere, playing a crucial role as an indicator of climate change.
Its reduction permits more oceanic heat and moisture to enter the atmosphere, potentially altering pressure systems, storm formation, and large-scale atmospheric circulation, thereby affecting weather patterns further south.
Unusual
From 2024 to 2025, there was a 5.8 percent decrease in Arctic sea ice extent during the winter peak phase, from February to March.
This represented the most significant year-to-year winter drop in the satellite record, which has been maintained since 1978.
Although the peak phase sea ice—reaching its maximum extent after winter growth—showed a slight recovery in 2026, it remained the second lowest on record.
To further examine these results, the team compared satellite observations with simulated events using the latest climate change models.
Alessandro Silvano, co-author from the University of Southampton, stated: “By identifying these analogous events, we found that such a sharp drop in 2025 was unusual, but physically plausible under current Arctic warming.”

Examining similar events also helps researchers predict what typically follows a sharp winter sea ice decline like the one seen in 2025.
Professor Simon Josey, co-author from the National Oceanography Centre, explained: “The model analogues suggest that, under current levels of Arctic warming, Arctic winter sea ice is more likely to fluctuate around a lower level over the next few years than quickly rebound to early 2020s conditions.”
Mr. Chan added: “Short-term recoveries can temporarily obscure the longer-term direction of Arctic sea ice change.
“The low winter sea ice extents in 2025 and 2026 clearly show that Arctic sea ice loss has not stopped – it is continuing in a warming climate.”
The research was supported by a UK Research and Innovation’s Future Leaders Fellowship and the Natural Environment Research Council.
