Disney has announced a collaboration with TikTok to integrate Disney-themed fan content into the Disney+ app. The initiative will kick off with a U.S. pilot program in the coming months, with plans to expand to other regions thereafter.
Under this agreement, TikTok fan videos featuring Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and other franchises will be showcased in the “Verts” section of Disney+, a short-form video feed that Disney introduced a few months ago.
Disney has been actively enhancing the content variety on this video feed. Last year, the company dedicated $1 billion to OpenAI under a three-year licensing agreement, allowing the creation of short videos using Disney characters on OpenAI’s platform, Sora. However, this plan was disrupted when OpenAI unexpectedly shut down Sora in March.
This TikTok partnership appears to be a logical step forward, especially as streaming platforms vie with social media for user engagement. This competitive landscape partly motivated Disney to launch the Verts feature, following similar moves by Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video.
The collaboration also signifies Disney’s recognition of social media’s role in discovering new talent. Through the newly launched Disney Creator Ambassador Program, TikTok creators will have access to Disney’s extensive content library, along with opportunities for rewards, increased visibility, exclusive event access, and career growth.
Other streaming platforms like Tubi and Peacock have also engaged TikTok creators to develop original long-form content for their services.
The announcement coincides with Disney’s Q3 financial results, where the company reported that its subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) operating income more than doubled to $712 million from $329 million the previous year. Additionally, Disney has restructured by shifting its consumer products business from the Experiences division to Studios.
