Critics are skeptical of President Donald Trump’s recent explanation regarding his decision to exit Air Force One in a catering container last month due to a security threat.
The original plane continued its flight with media and some of his staff onboard, while Trump covertly traveled on a military aircraft.
This maneuver effectively turned the first Air Force One into a decoy, leaving those onboard unknowingly exposed to a risk that Trump was trying to avoid by using a different aircraft.
However, Trump’s perspective differs.
“Why was it too dangerous for you to fly on Air Force One but not too dangerous for the press?” a reporter questioned Trump on Tuesday night.
“I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk. I think it was at greater risk because that would be the plane I think that they would be more likely to go for,” Trump replied.
Nonetheless, a flaw in Trump’s reasoning is evident: Everyone witnessed him board the first plane and assumed he remained on it.
Unbeknownst to others, he had secretly disembarked through another exit, concealed within a catering container, and was transported in that container to a waiting U.S. military C-32A for the flight to the United Kingdom.
The standard procedure of assigning the Air Force One call sign to any plane the president boards was not followed in this instance. The initial aircraft retained the designation, sustaining the illusion that Trump was still aboard.
Critics have criticized Trump for his flawed reasoning and for sidestepping the threat while leaving others to unknowingly act as decoys.
