A new image has surfaced on Windows Central, providing a look back at a pivotal moment just before a significant merger.
The photograph reveals a prototype of the so-called Surface Phone, believed to date back to 2013, the same year the renowned Nokia Lumia 1020 was launched. This device was reportedly intended for release the following year alongside the company’s Surface Pro 2-in-1.
The prototype appears to be operating on an early version of Windows Phone 8.1, powered by an unspecified Qualcomm processor. The display is a modest 720p, a common resolution at that time as 1080p was just becoming standard.

The phone’s design is consistent with the company’s Surface aesthetic, which was later seen in the Microsoft Surface Duo 2. It features a flat-edged metallic body with a Windows logo on the back. The front display is accompanied by three navigation keys, with the Windows logo centrally placed.
Additionally, there is a single camera on the rear.
The report indicates that the device includes individual volume controls on the right side, a power button on the top, and a 3.5mm headphone jack with a micro-USB port at the bottom.
