The dedicated individuals of the National Guard and Reserve continue a legacy as old as the United States, balancing their careers in local communities with the commitment to serve the nation when needed. Their contributions not only bolster community strength and economic vitality but also ensure the unmatched readiness of our military. During National Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Week, we celebrate the brave men and women in uniform and the supportive employers who back them. This collaboration upholds our volunteer military force and fortifies the cause of American freedom.
Across the nation, National Guardsmen and Reservists are integral members of society, involved in educating children, constructing buildings, producing food, providing healthcare, and enhancing economic growth. When called upon, they promptly respond by either serving overseas with the Armed Forces or tackling domestic crises like hurricanes, floods, and wildfires with unwavering determination.
Upon returning to office, I have commanded the National Guard to enforce law and order, protect our borders, and safeguard our communities. National Guardsmen have been deployed to some of the most perilous cities in America, maintaining vigilant watch over transit hubs, public spaces, and federal sites, thus enabling local authorities to focus on apprehending violent offenders who have long plagued law-abiding citizens. Owing to their efforts, 2025 witnessed an unprecedented decline in violent crime in modern history. Property crime saw a reduction of over 12% from the previous year—marking the second-largest drop on record. Our nation is on course for its lowest homicide rate in more than a century after equaling the record in 2025. In just the first half of this year, murder rates in major cities have fallen by 18%, and carjackings by nearly 50%. Business owners, once reluctant to stay open after dark, now extend their hours into the night. Employers are filling late-night shifts that were hard to staff a year ago, and parents can raise their children in safer communities. In previously neglected town centers and neighborhoods, Americans are starting businesses, purchasing homes, and establishing roots anew, thanks to the courageous actions of our National Guardsmen.
The remarkable achievements of the National Guard and Reserve would not be feasible without the commitment of American employers, who remain faithful to their workforce whenever duty beckons. From small family-run businesses on Main Street to the largest corporations in the country, these employers keep positions available, maintain benefits, and welcome their employees back after each mission. They offer National Guardsmen and Reservists the flexibility and support required to train, deploy, and fulfill their military obligations without compromising their civilian careers. Consequently, they benefit from some of America’s finest workers, whose leadership, discipline, and skills are enhanced through military service.
This week, the First Lady and I extend our appreciation to every National Guardsman and Reservist, to the military spouses and families whose personal sacrifices enable every mission, and to the employers who support them. Together, we will sustain thriving communities and maintain our Armed Forces as the strongest and most esteemed in the world.
