The Las Vegas Raiders have issued a troubling update about their running back, Ashton Jeanty.

On Sunday, it was reported that the former Boise State standout sustained a lower-leg injury during practice. While trying to catch a low pass from quarterback Kirk Cousins, Jeanty awkwardly landed on his right leg. Trainers assisted him off the field, and he exited the session early for a medical evaluation.

Sports doctor Jeff Mueller expressed his concern about Jeanty’s condition on social media.

“Not at all what you want to read regarding Ashton Jeanty…. Really hope it’s not serious but doesn’t sound good,” Mueller tweeted.

In another post, Mueller speculated on the possible nature of Jeanty’s injury resulting from the awkward landing.

“Praying it’s just a hyperextension or MCL injury non-severe, but sometimes these contact injuries can be ACL + or fracture.”

Coach Klint Kubiak has not yet provided an update on the running back’s condition.

The Las Vegas Raiders selected Ashton Jeanty as the No. 6 pick last year. During his rookie season, he accumulated 975 yards and scored five touchdowns rushing. However, the team ended last in the AFC West with a disappointing 3-14 record.

Jeanty’s participation in the Raiders’ preseason games has been limited. He rushed three times for 16 yards in their 27-14 loss to the Cardinals. The Raiders did not play him during their 22-20 win against the Houston Texans on Thursday.

Who could serve as Ashton Jeanty’s potential replacement?

If Ashton Jeanty is sidelined indefinitely at the start of the season, then the Raiders will rely on rookie Mike Washington Jr., who was drafted with the No. 122 pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Mike Washington Jr. began his college career with the Buffalo Bulls in 2021, then transferred to New Mexico State in 2023. He completed his final year of eligibility at Arkansas, ending with a 2-10 (0-8 SEC) record last season.

Over five years, Washington played in 55 collegiate games, amassing 2,914 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. Besides the rookie, the Raiders have Dylan Laube, Dare Ogunbowale, and Roman Hemby as options on the running back depth chart. Coach Klint Kubiak is scheduled to speak with reporters on Tuesday and is expected to provide an update on Ashton Jeanty’s status.
