The FBI has identified the driver of the truck that rammed into a crowd on Bourbon Street during New Year’s celebrations, resulting in the tragic loss of 15 lives and leaving 35 individuals injured.

Details of the Attack

The perpetrator, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen and Army veteran from Houston, rented the vehicle used in the attack. The FBI revealed that Jabbar had improvised explosive devices in the truck and at two locations in the French Quarter, along with body armor and an ISIS flag displayed on the vehicle.

Investigation and Response

The FBI is actively investigating whether Jabbar had any accomplices in planning the attack. Bourbon Street has been sealed off as a crime scene. The Sugar Bowl, scheduled for the same day, was postponed to ensure public safety.

Law Enforcement Actions

Jabbar drove into the crowd early in the morning and engaged in a shootout with the police before succumbing to his injuries. Two officers were wounded in the exchange but are reported to be in stable condition. New Orleans authorities are working to enhance security measures, especially as the city prepares to host the upcoming Super Bowl.

Government Response

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has declared an expanded emergency and deployed additional resources, including National Guard personnel, to aid in the investigation. The state’s Attorney General, Liz Murrill, has pledged to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Call for Vigilance

Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. U.S. Representative Troy Carter emphasized the importance of cooperation in providing information to law enforcement.
