NYC must hire more cops to combat subway crime: Bill Bratton

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton is advocating for an increase in the number of police officers in New York City to address the rising crime rates in the subway system and beyond. Bratton, who previously served as commissioner in the 1990s, highlighted the decrease in the number of officers from 38,000 during his tenure to under 34,000 currently. Despite Mayor Eric Adams’ efforts to bolster the force with additional graduating classes, Bratton believes more officers are needed to effectively tackle crime.

Bratton emphasized the importance of having a sufficient number of officers specifically assigned to patrol the subway, as relying on overtime and surging officers can lead to increased costs and fatigue among the force. He also criticized the deployment of National Guard soldiers to the subway, stating that they lack the necessary authority to address criminal activities effectively.

The call for more officers comes in the wake of a series of violent incidents in the subway, including stabbings and a tragic torching death of a passenger. Some critics of the new $9 congestion driving toll in Manhattan are using the subway violence as a reason to oppose the commuter tax, citing safety concerns for commuters.

Bratton expressed confidence in the new NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, commending her efforts to address misconduct within the department. He acknowledged the challenges she faces, particularly with regard to the lenient laws supported by the City Council and state Legislature. Despite these obstacles, Bratton believes that a combination of increased police presence and the utilization of modern technology can help reduce crime rates in the city.

The NYPD has announced plans to recruit more officers in the coming years, with a goal of reaching 35,000 officers. Mayor Adams and Commissioner Tisch are implementing strategies to add more officers to the force, with 600 additional officers already deployed and a new class of recruits set to enter the academy soon.

Overall, the focus remains on increasing police presence to enhance public safety and combat crime effectively. The NYPD is committed to strengthening safety measures across all neighborhoods in the city through the addition of more trained officers.
