The funding pause on grants for international exchange and study-abroad programs has left students like Frida Larios in limbo. Larios, a senior at California State University, Los Angeles, had just arrived in Seoul for a study-abroad scholarship when she received an email informing her that her money was in jeopardy.

The State Department’s decision to halt funding for programs like the Fulbright-Hays and Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship has left thousands of students and program participants uncertain about the future of their trips. The lack of clarity from the State Department has only added to the anxiety and stress felt by those affected.

Larios, who relies on financial aid to afford her education, was shocked by the news but not entirely surprised. The Gilman scholarship was her ticket to studying abroad, and without it, she would not have been able to afford the trip. The uncertainty surrounding the funding for these programs is just one example of the chaos created by the Trump administration’s budget cuts.

Melissa Torres, president of the Forum on Education Abroad, expressed concern over the impact of the funding pause on the ability to implement these programs effectively. Students and their families are left wondering if their trips will be canceled or if they will be left stranded abroad without financial support.

The Institute of International Education, which administers the Gilman and Fulbright scholarships, sent out a brief and vague email to grant recipients, informing them that they had not received scheduled reimbursements from the State Department. This lack of communication has left students like Hannah Ferreira, who had plans to study in Austria over the summer, unsure about the status of their trips.

For Larios, the funding pause has left her feeling stranded in Seoul. Despite reaching out to her university for assistance, she has been offered student loans as a last resort. Living off of ramen and trying to spend as little money as possible, she is facing financial uncertainty while trying to make the most of her study-abroad experience.

As the situation continues to unfold, students and program participants are left in a state of limbo, unsure of what the future holds for their international experiences. The lack of clear communication and the uncertainty surrounding the funding for these programs has only added to the stress and anxiety felt by those affected.
