On Friday, James O’Keefe reported that the IRS tax examiner who bravely spoke out against the agency’s practices has faced retaliation for his whistleblowing. David Nelson, the whistleblower in question, revealed that his network access was revoked just a day after he went public.
“We can’t nearly meet the expectations that Americans have of us,” David Nelson, a Tax Examining Technician at the IRS, shared with O’Keefe earlier this week. “Our systems are outdated and disconnected. We feel utterly constrained.”
Nelson lamented the chronic underfunding of the agency, stating, “For decades, there has been no meaningful investment in improving our capabilities. When funds are allocated, they often only address minor issues instead of tackling systemic problems head-on.”
He further elaborated on the technological shortcomings, mentioning their reliance on the Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). “We are using software so outdated it’s practically a relic,” he quipped.
According to Nelson, these obsolete tools have not only inflated the IRS workforce but also caused significant delays in tax processing. “With some strategic changes—like implementing a centralized inventory system and replacing IDRS—we could drastically streamline the IRS operations and possibly reduce our workforce,” he asserted.
In a startling move last month, the IRS terminated 6,000 employees amid President Trump’s broader initiative to shrink the federal workforce, with plans to cut up to 50% of IRS staff in the pipeline.
“I’m not afraid of losing my job,” Nelson declared. “I’m willing to risk my career if it means advocating for the American public and supporting my dedicated colleagues at the IRS.” However, the price of his courage appeared steep when his network access was abruptly cut off.
When O’Keefe reached out to the IRS Chief of Media for comments, she declined to engage and hung up the phone, a move that speaks volumes about the agency’s transparency—or lack thereof.
