Donald Trump may envision himself as a sovereign ruler and a herald of truth, yet the reality paints a dramatically different picture. As he barrels towards a potential second presidential failure, the reality is that his messaging frequently alienates the very Americans he seeks to persuade.

The latest testament to Trump’s dwindling effectiveness comes from a recent poll regarding American support for Ukraine. Following Trump’s disparagement of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and his apparent alignment with Putin, a notable shift has occurred: the portion of Americans believing the U.S. has adequately supported Ukraine has surged by 14 percentage points.

According to Gallup:

Three years into the Russia-Ukraine conflict, 46% of Americans now feel the U.S. is not doing enough to assist Ukraine, reflecting a 16-percentage-point rise since December and marking a new high in the trend that began in 2022. Concurrently, those believing the U.S. is providing too much assistance (30%) or the right amount (23%) has dwindled.

…

The poll also indicates a five-point uptick in the number of Americans advocating ongoing support for Ukraine to reclaim its territories, even if it necessitates extended engagement (53%), compared to those favoring a swift resolution to the conflict, even at the cost of ceding land to Russia (45%). This contrasts with December’s figures, where 50% preferred a rapid end to the war—the highest percentage recorded for this sentiment—while 48% supported continued involvement. Prior to that, majorities from 55% to 66% were in favor of aiding Ukraine in its territorial recovery.

This polling was conducted in the wake of Trump’s controversial meeting with Zelenskyy, highlighting the political repercussions of the former president’s bullying tactics and his role as an unwitting mouthpiece for Putin.

Rather than diminishing America’s commitment to Ukraine, Trump’s actions seem to have inadvertently reinforced it.

Putin may have anticipated that Trump’s return to power would pave the way for an easy victory in Ukraine, but the American populace is clearly voicing a different sentiment.

Trump appears to be operating in a parallel universe, far removed from mainstream America, and the fallout from his alternate-reality presidency is likely to reverberate negatively for Republicans during the 2026 midterm elections.
