As if echoing a scene from *The Wizard of Oz*, Republicans are now dismantling Trump’s grand legislative vision, which was once the centerpiece of his presidency.

Donald Trump famously insisted that his legislative ambitions be consolidated into “one big beautiful bill.” While the bill remains large, it is increasingly at risk of becoming a political monstrosity.

Jake Sherman of Politico recently reported on X:

BREAKING NEWS: key House Republicans from New York REJECT $30,000 SALT deduction cap and say the leadership is jeopardizing Trump’s agenda. STEFANIK, LAWLER, LALOTA and GARBARINO

The statement from these four House Republicans is telling:

They have dismissed the proposed changes. The dilemma facing Speaker Johnson and Trump is that if they expand the SALT deduction, they risk losing support from far-right conservatives who oppose any perceived tax increases. Essentially, they are caught in a classic political conundrum: they cannot afford to please everyone.

The significance of this rebellion from four New York Republicans cannot be understated; their dissent is potent enough to potentially derail the entire bill.

Had House Republicans not heeded the whims of a president who struggled to manage even a single “infrastructure week”—despite his incessant proclamations about such weeks—they might have avoided this predicament altogether.

It is critical for Democrats and Independents to recognize that if this bill fails, it could also dismantle the Republican plans for substantial cuts to Medicaid and food assistance. The cuts to Medicaid are intertwined with the tax cuts, which include the SALT deduction. Thus, if one element falters, the entire structure risks collapse.

The intricate web of Trump’s legislative agenda hangs by a thread, and it would be quite poetic if internal strife among House Republicans were to be the catalyst for its downfall.

What are your thoughts on the potential for House Republicans to jeopardize Trump’s entire agenda? We welcome your comments below.
