WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the implementation of a 50% tariff on goods from the European Union will be delayed from June 1 to July 9. This decision was made to allow for negotiations with the EU.

Following a call with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, Trump stated that she expressed interest in engaging in serious negotiations. Trump emphasized the importance of such discussions, stating that he had been advocating for it.

Previously, Trump had threatened to impose the 50% tariff on EU goods due to challenges faced in trade negotiations. However, after the call with von der Leyen, tensions seemed to ease temporarily.

Trump later confirmed the extension of the tariff deadline to July 9, 2025, through a post on Truth Social. Von der Leyen also expressed readiness to swiftly progress in negotiations, highlighting the significance of the trade relationship between the EU and the U.S.

“Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively,” she said. “To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9.”
