Two days ago, President Donald J. Trump reignited tensions in the ongoing tariff dispute with the European Union, which he claims has been engineered to “exploit” the United States. In a bold declaration, he introduced a staggering “straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, effective June 1, 2025.”
“The European Union was created primarily to take advantage of the United States in terms of trade and has proven very challenging to negotiate with. Their formidable trade barriers, VAT taxes, excessive corporate penalties, non-monetary trade restrictions, currency manipulations, and unjust lawsuits against American companies have resulted in a trade deficit exceeding $250 million annually—an utterly unacceptable figure. Our talks with them have stalled! Therefore, I propose a straightforward 50% Tariff on the European Union starting June 1, 2025. Products manufactured in the United States will be exempt from the tariff. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
However, in a surprising twist today, Trump announced a new deadline of July 9, 2025, after a conversation with EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen.
“Today, I spoke with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who requested an extension on the June 1st deadline regarding the 50% Tariff on EU trade. I am pleased to grant that extension to July 9, 2025. It was an honor to do so. The Commission President indicated that negotiations will commence promptly. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
In his response, Trump was keen to emphasize the sequence of events: she called him, she requested the extension, and, of course, it was his privilege to acquiesce.
