An accused murderer who managed to escape house arrest by removing his ankle monitor has been apprehended after a month-long manhunt as one of Texas’ 10 most wanted fugitives. Trevor McEuen, 32, faced capital murder charges and failed to appear in court on May 5, sparking a statewide search.

Governor Greg Abbott criticized the incident as evidence of the need to address Texas’ flawed bail system. McEuen was finally apprehended on Monday, with a photo showing him dirty and barefoot in the back of a police car.

McEuen had been placed on the list of Texas’ most-wanted fugitives, with a $30,000 reward for information leading to his capture. It is unclear at this time whether a tip played a role in his arrest.

The charges against McEuen stem from the 2023 killing of his neighbor, Aaron Martinez, who was fatally shot multiple times. The incident followed a long-standing dispute between the two neighbors, with Martinez’s family alleging that McEuen had previously fired shots at Martinez’s property and used racial slurs.

After the murder, McEuen was arrested following a standoff with the SWAT team and charged with murder. He was later indicted for capital murder in November 2023. Despite being released from jail in September, McEuen was incarcerated once again for violating his terms by posting photos of Martinez online.

In December, McEuen posted a $2 million bond and was released, only to cut off his ankle monitor and flee. Governor Abbott emphasized the need for bail reform in light of McEuen’s actions, stating that violent criminals like him should not be allowed back on the streets.

The capture of Trevor McEuen serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing issues within the criminal justice system to ensure the safety of communities. The swift apprehension of McEuen highlights the dedication of law enforcement in pursuing fugitives and bringing them to justice.
