Paramount Global chair Shari Redstone recently revealed that she underwent surgery for thyroid cancer in May this year, following her diagnosis earlier in the year. Despite the challenging circumstances, Redstone is continuing with her professional and philanthropic endeavors while undergoing treatment. The spokesperson for Redstone shared that her prognosis is excellent, and she is grateful for the support of her family during this time.
At 71 years old, Redstone is currently navigating the complexities of finalizing a significant deal with Skydance Media to merge with Paramount, which owns CBS and various television stations, streaming platforms, and Paramount Pictures. The agreement was made in July 2024 but has yet to receive approval from the FCC, led by Brendan Carr, an ally of former President Trump. Additionally, Redstone is facing a lawsuit filed by President Trump against CBS News over a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris.
The news of Redstone’s cancer diagnosis adds another layer of difficulty to the already intricate situation she is managing. According to a report by The New York Times, Redstone sought medical advice two months ago due to symptoms like fatigue. She underwent surgery to remove her thyroid gland, but cancer cells had also spread to her vocal cords, requiring ongoing radiation treatment.
Redstone confided in David Ellison, the head of Skydance, as well as close family members and friends about her diagnosis. If the Paramount-Skydance deal successfully goes through, Redstone will step down from the merged company’s board.
Overall, Redstone’s resilience and determination to overcome health challenges while juggling significant business deals reflect her strong leadership qualities. Her ability to navigate through adversity with grace and perseverance is truly commendable. We wish her a speedy recovery and continued success in her professional endeavors.
