Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel was closed for nearly eight hours this week after a multi-vehicle crash left five people injured, the Colorado State Patrol reported.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Wednesday when a westbound semitrailer lost control of its brakes and collided with another semitrailer, causing both vehicles to veer off the left side of the highway. The second truck rolled over before coming to a stop in the median.
Aside from the semitrailers, the first truck also struck an eastbound Toyota RAV-4 and a Toyota Tacoma during the collision. Four individuals were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, while the driver of the second truck sustained life-threatening injuries.
The 57-year-old Texas man responsible for the crash was cited by state troopers for careless driving causing injury, according to official reports.
The Colorado State Patrol is actively investigating the incident, and individuals who witnessed the crash are encouraged to contact dispatch at 970-249-4392 if they have not yet provided a statement.
