President Trumpâs decision to deploy National Guard troops to California, despite no request from state officials, starkly contrasts with his inaction during the January 6 Capitol insurrection. While his supporters stormed the Capitol, Trump remained passive; yet now, when local leaders assert they have things under control, he feels the need to intervene.
Senator Cory Booker pointed out this hypocrisy during an appearance on Meet The Press:
âFor decades, law enforcement has thrived on collaboration and communication. The president’s unsolicited intervention, breaking with longstanding tradition, will only exacerbate tensions. We have a president who chose inaction while the Capitol was under siege, leading to violence against police officers, some even resulting in fatalities. And then, after those responsible were held accountable, he pardoned them. So, for him to now discuss effective law enforcement is nothing short of hypocritical.â
âMeanwhile, we witness peaceful protests unfolding in Los Angeles. Any violence against law enforcement is unacceptable, yet local authorities are equipped to manage the situation. Importantly, many of these protests are fueled by the chaos stemming from the president’s actions, such as arresting individuals attending their immigration hearingsâpeople trying to comply with the law. This has left even his Republican supporters outraged as he continues to target non-violent individuals rather than focusing on actual threats to public safety.â

It’s worth noting that Trump had the opportunity to proactively dispatch the National Guard to the Capitol on January 6, but he chose not to.
Ultimately, Trumpâs interventions seem to only appear when his supporters are not involved.
Supporters of Trump claim that they did not endorse these immigration actions, but this narrative contradicts the very promises he made during his campaign. He was clear about his stance on immigration, and his supporters rallied behind him.
These constituents cannot simply declare a do-over when the reality of his policies unfolds. They chose to back him, and now they must contend with the consequences of the very actions they supported.
The majority of Americans are not oblivious to this situation. Many, including Senator Booker, recognize the glaring inconsistencies in Trumpâs actions and are vocalizing their concerns.
