California Democrats Propose “No Secret Police Act” to Ban Law Enforcement from Wearing Face Coverings

Amidst federal crackdown on anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles, State Sens. Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguin of California have announced their plan to introduce the “No Secret Police Act”. This act aims to prohibit most law enforcement officers from wearing face coverings while interacting with the public. Additionally, the bill would require officers to display identifying information on their uniforms.

Wiener expressed concerns about the rise of “secret police” and emphasized the importance of transparency in law enforcement interactions with the public. The bill aims to address the fear and chaos created by masked officers without identifying information.

The proposed legislation would not impact SWAT members or officers required to wear masks during certain disasters. Riot gear that allows the officer’s face to be visible through the covering would still be permitted. The bill also takes into account the use of certain masks during disasters such as wildfires in California.

In response to recent protests in Los Angeles and New York City, where masked protesters engaged in violent activities, there have been calls to ban face coverings for protesters as well. The use of masks has made it difficult for law enforcement to identify and apprehend individuals involved in criminal acts.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has considered implementing a statewide mask ban, particularly for individuals committing crimes while wearing masks. The issue of face coverings in public spaces continues to be a topic of debate and legislation across various states.
