The shooting of a border agent by an illegal immigrant on Saturday night highlights the failures of progressive policies on the border, crime, and New York’s sanctuary city status. The 42-year-old off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was attacked by two armed thugs while sitting in a park with a friend. Despite being shot in the face, the agent managed to fire back. Both suspects, Miguel Mora and Christhian Aybar-Berroa, are illegal immigrants who entered the country during the Biden border rush.

Mora, the alleged triggerman, has a history of violent crimes and a deportation order to the Dominican Republic. Aybar-Berroa also has a violent crime record and an order of removal to the DR. Both individuals were stopped at the border but were allowed into the country, reflecting the lax immigration policies that have been in place for the past four years.

President Biden’s decision to halt deportations for 100 days upon taking office contributed to the influx of illegal immigrants crossing the border. New York’s criminal justice reforms, including the elimination of cash bail, have also played a role in allowing criminals like Mora and Aybar-Berroa to roam free. Governor Kathy Hochul’s extension of a sanctuary jurisdiction order further prevents state employees from cooperating with federal immigration officers, creating a safe haven for illegal immigrants in New York City.

Despite Mayor Eric Adams’ efforts to roll back sanctuary city rules and cooperate with ICE officials, the city remains a dangerous place for both residents and law enforcement officers. The lack of cooperation with federal authorities and the leniency towards criminals have created an environment where violent crimes go unpunished and innocent individuals are put at risk.

While President Trump’s efforts to secure the border and deport criminal illegal immigrants have been effective, progressive opposition has hindered these measures. It is imperative that policymakers prioritize public safety and work towards creating a safer environment for all residents. The shooting of the border agent serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of failed immigration and criminal justice policies.
