At a recent gathering of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), panelists presented some eyebrow-raising viewpoints, advocating for the performance of abortions in church settings and the dismantling of the traditional family structure, among other radical ideas.
It’s crucial to note that these individuals are significantly influencing the campaign of Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race. Should Mamdani secure victory, the implications of these views could resonate deeply within the city’s governance.
The transparency with which these ideas are expressed suggests a boldness that may, however, be somewhat misplaced.
According to The Post Millennial, the panel, titled “The Left and the Family: A Roundtable,” was held on July 4 as part of the Socialism Conference in Chicago. In the video uploaded to YouTube, the DSA articulated their stance that the nuclear family is “an inherently repressive, racist, and hetero-sexist institution that functionally reinforces and reproduces capitalism.”
The speakers included Emily Janakiram from New York City for Abortion Rights, University of Chicago sociologist Eman Abdelhadi, Katie Gibson of the University of Chicago, and Portland DSA member Olivia Katbi, who is also involved with BDS activism. Throughout their discussion, they posited links between capitalism and the nuclear family, labeling both as oppressive systems in dire need of transformation.
Gibson went so far as to claim that children from low-income households are “treated as if they have committed a crime,” while also questioning parental authority. She stated, “If you are born into a home headed by a Christian fundamentalist tyrant, for instance, you have the rights that that Christian fundamentalist tyrant gives you.” This comparison extended to a critique of former President Donald Trump, whom she likened to a tyrant for children in state care.

If New York City chooses to elect Zohran Mamdani, it will also be endorsing the ideologies presented by these panelists. Such a decision could lead to significant ramifications for both the city and, by extension, the nation.
