The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan, recognized as one of the top eight graduate programs for art and design in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, has opened applications for the MFA in Art program for Fall 2026.

Students in the MFA program are immersed in a stimulating academic atmosphere supported by a distinguished faculty of 44 esteemed artists and scholars. Throughout their two years, they benefit from a collaborative environment that extends across the University of Michigan, tapping into the rich resources and partnerships unique to R1 research institutions. Engaging with internationally acclaimed visiting artists and critics, students receive personalized critiques and invaluable connections through studio visits and discussions.

Participants in the program enjoy substantial financial assistance, access to premier studio facilities, a solid educational framework for their creative pursuits, exhibition chances, and continuous guidance and mentorship from faculty. A key highlight of the program is a funded international project that students carry out between their first and second years, allowing them to dive deeply into their research and creative work. As they conclude their studies, graduates gain enhanced clarity on how their artistic endeavors engage with and reflect societal issues, preparing them for diverse opportunities across multiple sectors.

“The Stamps MFA Program nurtures interdisciplinary, research-oriented, and materially expressive artistic practices — often intertwined with critical discourse and pressing social issues. Our faculty and community collaborate with students to contextualize their work in ways that resonate with their aspirations in today’s complex landscape.”

Angela Washko, MFA Program Director and Catherine B Heller Professor of Art

Attendees at the Stamps Faculty and Graduate Studios observe the works of Sujay Saple (MFA ’26).

Explore the Stamps website for a visual overview of the MFA program through our latest thesis exhibition, and find out more about the program in our upcoming virtual open house and Graduate National Portfolio Day events.

Applications must be submitted by January 3, 2026.
