Monica Cannon-Grant, a once-celebrated Black Lives Matter activist from Boston, recently confessed to a series of federal fraud charges, revealing that she misappropriated donations intended for social justice causes to sustain an extravagant lifestyle.

Once heralded as a beacon of activism within the community and even honored as Bostonian of the Year, Cannon-Grant found herself engulfed in scandal as reports surfaced that her organization, Violence in Boston (VIB), served more as a personal bank account than a nonprofit dedicated to social change.

Her actions have landed her facing a minimum sentence of two years in prison.

The New York Post reports:

BLM-Connected Activist Admits to Donor Fraud to Fuel Luxurious Lifestyle

A former icon of social activism in Boston has pleaded guilty to defrauding supporters, including the Black Lives Matter movement, out of significant sums—funds she converted into a personal slush fund.

Monica Cannon-Grant, aged 44, entered her guilty plea on Monday, admitting to 18 counts of fraud masterminded alongside her late husband while running the Violence in Boston group, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts.

The activist diverted donations under the pretense of feeding children and organizing protests, including those sparked by the 2020 murder of George Floyd. In a staggering act of deception, she secured over $100,000 in federal pandemic unemployment aid, which she funneled towards personal expenses such as auto loan payments and insurance.

As her deceit unraveled, it was revealed that Cannon-Grant transferred funds into personal accounts to finance a lifestyle that included rent payments, shopping sprees, gourmet takeout, nail salon visits, and even a summer getaway to Maryland.

Incredible, isn’t it?

In a stark irony, Monica Cannon-Grant exploited donations while advocating against systemic injustices. This case illustrates a troubling trend in nonprofits where fraud can sometimes eclipse genuine altruism. https://t.co/ir3q9lqYrh
