Trump’s Trade Policies: A Boon for American Manufacturing?

President Donald J. Trump’s bold trade initiatives are sparking a revival in American manufacturing, garnering enthusiastic endorsements from family-owned enterprises across the nation, many of which have endured the brunt of unfair global trade practices for decades. From steel producers to mold makers, their collective sentiments reveal a crucial narrative: these policies are not merely about job preservation; they are about rejuvenating the very essence of American industry.

Voices from the Ground

Walker Forge, a third-generation family-owned enterprise in Clintonville, Wisconsin, specializes in steel forgings for various sectors, including defense.

  • Will Walker (President): “For the first time in generations, we have a President prioritizing American manufacturing. These tariffs unequivocally put America first, signaling to companies that they can no longer undermine our domestic industrial base.”

Franchino Mold & Engineering, located in Lansing, Michigan, is dedicated to the design, engineering, and maintenance of plastic injection molds.

  • Mike Hetherington (President): “As we celebrate 70 years as a U.S. moldmaker, it’s disheartening to find that I can purchase a complete injection mold from China for less than it costs to buy raw materials here. We adhere to stringent labor, safety, and environmental standards, unlike our international competitors who benefit from subsidies and lax regulations. Tariffs are essential for leveling the playing field, allowing U.S. moldmakers to compete fairly. We seek not protection but equity.”

ELLWOOD, a 115-year-old family-run business in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, produces high-quality metals and custom components for critical sectors such as defense and aerospace.

  • Ben Huffman (President and CEO): “We back President Trump’s mission to reform the global trading framework. The current system places U.S. manufacturing at a stark disadvantage due to unfair, subsidized practices overseas. It’s crucial to rectify these historically damaging trade dynamics.”

Dyersville Die Cast, based in Dyersville, Iowa, specializes in custom aluminum and zinc die casting as well as secondary services like CNC machining.

  • Robert Willits (President): “After 24 years in this role, I can confidently affirm that President Trump’s stance on tariffs is spot on. I fully support his efforts to safeguard American manufacturers. Thank you, President Trump, for honoring your commitments.”

TK Mold & Engineering, Inc., situated in Romeo, Michigan, constructs prototype and production molds for the consumer goods and automotive sectors.

  • Tom Barr (President): “At TK Mold & Engineering, we’re proud to be part of America’s automotive hub. Thanks to recent tariff policies, we’ve seen a surge in interest for domestic manufacturing. In just three days, we received three requests to reshore mold production back to the U.S. Tariffs are creating tangible opportunities for American enterprises and revitalizing essential trades like moldmaking.”

Industrial Molds, Inc., a family-run operation in Rockford, Illinois, employs 52 people in the tool and die sector.

  • Andy Peterson (CEO): “The introduction of tariffs has made our clients reconsider their supply chains, leading to an uptick in domestic sourcing. This shift has positively altered our yearly forecast, prompting plans to expand our workforce.”

Legacy Precision Molds, Inc., based in Grandville, Michigan, focuses on the design and manufacture of precise plastic injection molds.

  • Tyler VanRee (Vice President): “The recent tariffs have noticeably benefited our operations. We’re witnessing a considerable increase in quote requests and new projects, along with heightened interest in reshoring. At this rate, tariffs are propelling momentum for U.S.-based manufacturing, and we applaud the administration’s dedication to fortifying American industry.”

Campbell Press Repair, also located in Lansing, Michigan, is a second-generation family business catering to the metal forging and stamping industries with repair and modernization services.

  • Pete Campbell (President): “Who was aware of the tariff disparities before President Trump highlighted them? As a small business competing globally, these issues are critical.”

Westminster Tool, Inc., based in Plainfield, Connecticut, specializes in producing plastic injection molds for complex medical devices.

  • Hillary Thomas (Vice President): “The manufacturing tariffs introduced by President Trump have significantly aided our business, akin to the broad tariff initiatives of 2018. After the latest announcement, our quote requests surged by 25% in just a month. These tariffs, particularly against China, are essential for leveling the global manufacturing landscape for our industry.”

Metallus, Inc., located in Canton, Ohio, is a prominent U.S. producer of high-performance specialty metals from recycled scrap for various sectors including automotive and defense.

  • Michael S. Williams (President and CEO): “We advocate for the enforcement and expansion of the 232 tariffs on steel products, as they reinforce our commitment to fair trade and rectifying market disparities. For us as a domestic steel producer, these tariffs symbolize a triumph for both Metallus and the wider American steel sector.”

Twin Cities Die Casting, a 106-year-old employee-owned company in Minneapolis, Minnesota, operates three locations in the Midwest and employs 175 individuals.

  • Todd Olson (CEO): “Our industry, and specifically our company, has faced significant challenges from rising foreign competition, much of which is bolstered by unfair state support over the past decade. While the U.S. die casting market has expanded during this period, domestic production has sadly contracted.”
