Next Thursday night in Paris, a unique and groundbreaking event will take place at the Louvre after the conclusion of the final show on the haute couture schedule. Jordan Roth, a prominent Broadway producer and philanthropist, will present “Radical Acts of Unrelenting Beauty,” a series of three live performances that will explore the intersection of fashion and art within the walls of the world’s largest museum.
This event marks a significant moment in Roth’s career, as he steps into the realm of narrative fashion performance for the first time. Embracing his signature style and theatrical flair, Roth sees this as a natural evolution of his creative and emotional journey thus far. Collaborating with six dancers and featuring music by Thomas Roussel, Roth’s performances are part of the larger programming for La Nuit de la Mode, an evening dedicated to celebrating the conclusion of the “Louvre Couture” exhibition.
As we sit down with Roth in a secluded wing of the Louvre, inaccessible to the public, we are joined by Laurence des Cars, the museum’s director. Roth, dressed impeccably in a Dries Van Noten ensemble and Saint Laurent heels, exudes an air of elegance and sophistication as he discusses his upcoming performances.
Exploring themes of “Red,” “Wings,” and “Pyramid,” Roth’s performances will transform iconic symbols and artifacts found within the Louvre into dynamic and emotive fashion statements. Using digital images projected onto white garments of his own design, Roth will bring to life the essence of these themes through movement and fabric.
“Red” will highlight John Galliano’s empress gown from the Christian Dior spring 2005 collection, currently on display in the Napoleon III apartments. “Wings” will draw inspiration from a multitude of winged figures found in the museum’s collections, ranging from classical sculptures to Egyptian amulets. “Pyramid” will pay homage to the ever-changing sky above I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid structure, as well as celestial paintings by renowned artists.
