Asus has officially announced its exit from the smartphone market, marking the end of an era for the Taiwanese tech giant. The decision comes after years of struggling to compete in the highly competitive Android phone market, with both its ROG Phone and Zenfone lines failing to gain significant traction. Tech Advisor reports that Asus held less than 1.94% of the global market share, leading to the company’s decision to shift its focus to commercial PCs and “physical AI” products.

During an event in Taipei, Chairman Jonney Shih revealed the news, hinting at a potential temporary move away from smartphones. However, the future of the ROG Phone and Zenfone lines remains uncertain, with no plans for new releases in the foreseeable future. Existing Asus phone users can rest assured that the company will continue to provide software support for their devices, ensuring ongoing functionality and security updates.

The exit from the smartphone market signifies the end of innovative gaming smartphones like the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, which pushed the boundaries of mobile gaming technology. Despite the loss of competition in the smartphone market, some industry experts believe that it may not necessarily be a negative development. With concerns about global RAM shortages and the environmental impact of smartphone production, having one less manufacturer could have its benefits.

Asus is not disappearing altogether, as the company will continue to focus on its successful commercial PC business, where the ROG brand will continue to thrive. Additionally, Asus is looking to expand into the realm of physical AI hardware products, including robotics and smart glasses. This strategic shift reflects Asus’ commitment to innovation and growth in emerging technologies.

For consumers in search of a new handset, there are still plenty of options available in the market. Whether you’re looking for a gaming-focused device like the ROG Phone or a versatile smartphone like the Zenfone, there are many alternatives to consider. Stay tuned for updates on Asus’ future plans and product offerings as the company continues to evolve in the tech industry.
