Aziza “Z” Barnes, a talented poet and writer known for their work on the FX drama “Snowfall” and Netflix‘s “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” tragically passed away at the age of 32. Their family confirmed that Barnes died by suicide on December 15th, although no further details were provided.
In a statement released by their family, Barnes was described as an “undeniable and beloved artist, child, sibling, and friend.” Their impact on both the community and the industry was profound, and their absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of experiencing their presence and work. Barnes’ family asked for understanding and comfort as they navigate this difficult time.
Originally from Los Angeles, Barnes held a BFA from New York University and was pursuing an MFA at the University of Mississippi. They were also recognized as a Callaloo Fellow and Poet’s House Fellow, showcasing their talent and dedication to the craft of poetry.
Safia Elhillo, a close friend of Barnes, paid tribute to them in a heartfelt post on Substack. Elhillo praised Barnes as a “brilliant writer” and a “bender of the genre,” lamenting their untimely passing and the impact it has had on the community. She shared a poignant poem titled “Eulogy for Her,” written by Barnes, which she has cherished since their childhood days.
In addition to their work on “Snowfall” and “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” Barnes had other impressive credits to their name. They were involved in the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” set to be released in 2025, as well as Max’s hip-hop drama “Rap Sh!t.”
