Rory McIlroy has once again etched his name in golf history. However, it was his mother who perhaps captured the spotlight during the event.
At 36, McIlroy claimed his second consecutive green jacket at the 2026 Masters Tournament on Sunday, April 13, narrowly edging out Scottie Scheffler by one stroke. This victory marks a significant achievement in his career.
McIlroy now joins an elite group of golfers, becoming the fourth to win back-to-back Masters titles, alongside legends Jack Nicklaus (1965–1966), Nick Faldo (1989–1990), and Tiger Woods (2001–2002).
Yet, it was the personal story behind his victory that resonated deeply online.
During the final round, observant fans noticed a unique accessory by the side of Rory’s mother, Rosie McIlroy.
She carried a custom purse adorned with a print of a New York Times article from the previous year, celebrating her son’s career grand slam following his first win at Augusta.
Rosie’s tribute to her son’s accomplishment — a handbag dedicated to his success — quickly became a viral sensation. Social media users praised it as an ultimate display of motherly pride.
“A lovely personal touch—small moments like that really show how meaningful the win is for the whole family,” one X user commented.
“There is literally nothing not awesome about this,” another user shared.
Rory McIlroy’s Mom Almost Didn’t Attend the Masters
Interestingly, Rory’s parents, Rosie and Gerry McIlroy, had not planned to attend the tournament.
They were absent from the previous year’s Masters as they were busy settling into a new home in Ireland, coinciding with Rory’s victory.
This led them to believe that their absence might have been a lucky charm.
“Which they said was a good thing,” Rory explained in 2025 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, according to USA Today. “They were glad they had something to do to take their mind off of what was happening at the Masters.”
During the green jacket ceremony, Rory shared the effort it took to bring his parents to Augusta this time.
“They weren’t here last year to celebrate with us, and surprisingly, I had to convince them to come this year, because they thought the reason that I won was because they weren’t here. I’m glad that we proved that wrong,” he remarked.
Rory McIlroy’s Emotional Tribute to Mom and Dad
After securing his victory with the final putt, Rory immediately went to embrace his family. First, he hugged his daughter Poppy, followed by his wife, Erica Stoll, and then his parents.
In a conversation with Jim Nantz and Fred Ridley, Rory shared the superstitions that nearly kept his parents away.
“It’s the second Major win my mum has been at, she was at Hoylake in 2014 so there was a piece of them that didn’t want to come this year, because they didn’t come last year and maybe that was the reason [that I won],” he explained to the Irish Times.
“I’m so glad that they got to experience that today. We’re all going to have a great time tonight,” he added.

What followed was a touching moment that left many emotional.
“Mum and dad, I owe everything to you…” Rory expressed during the green jacket ceremony, fighting back tears. “You’re the most wonderful parents, and if I could be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.”
Later, during his post-ceremony press conference, Rory shared the emotional challenges he faced on the course.
“I caught myself a couple of times on the golf course thinking about them, and I was like ‘No, not yet, not yet’,” he recounted.
“It’s really cool to have them here. They missed it last year and the first thing I wanted to do was fly home to see them because I obviously wouldn’t be sitting up here if it wasn’t for them,” he continued.
Rory McIlroy Makes History (Again), as His Mom and Family Watches On
Rory has now secured six major titles — the 2011 U.S. Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships, 2014 Open Championship, and the 2025 and 2026 Masters.
He stands as the 15th golfer in PGA history to achieve at least six major wins and is the second European to do so.
Ultimately, it was all about family.
“When the ball trickled by and I marked it there from two inches or whatever I just looked at the back of the green because I saw my mum and dad and Erica and Poppy and I was just like ‘I can’t believe I’ve just done it again,’” he shared in the press conference.
“More joy. Not as emotional, but just, wow, it’s amazing. I can’t believe I did it again,” he concluded.
